a)  The product’s impact and effect on the audience

This the review score from Rotten tomatoes for orange is the new black Season 1 is 9.17/10 and we can see that the critics score is 98% in comparison of the audience score which is 93%,this is an amazing score and means that a lot of people are people are interested in it. By looking at critics score and the audience score i can see a positive correlation between them which shows that the show is actually doing good and people are liking it. When people off the internet see the reviews on Orange is the new black they will be very lily to watch it as the score is very high up.

I have also looked at a review from the website Rotten tomatoes which has given a 5 star review on the show. This is good because it shows what people think about the show and also what are their views on certain themes that are discussed in the Tv show. This gives a god feedback on the people who are interested to find out what are people's views on it and of course the freedom of  'word of mouth' is powerful to make other people watch the tv show.

The review score from IMDb is 8.2/10 which almost identical to the review from Rotten tomatoes. IMDb does not do critics score therefore i cannot compare that. when looking at both websites which are very popular on accurate reviews, people will be interested and they will believe that the the tv show is interesting and worth watching.

Looking at the written review side of it we can see that people's opinions match and that audience find it interesting and love watching orange is the new black. The so wide spread 'word of mouth' can have a significant impact on the views and subscribers Netflix is getting.

The review score from IGN is 9.0/10 which is really good and again it shows that people are enjoying the show. they do not have critics score therefore the score shown is an audience review score.

The written review on IGN is professionally done by the person writing the article has given a positive feedback about the show similarly to the other review websites.

Overall all the websites have very similar scores which will have a positive outcome on the viewers because by looking at the different websites and seeing the same reviews and scores this will encourage people to watch it. This will then impact the amount of views Netflix will receive as well as subscribers will increase meaning that they will make more profit.

The Instagram page ted to post funny backstage photos of the cast with secret hints and teasers for their fan group.

b)  Relevant issues of representation

Orange is the new black represent a big issue with the way black people are treated it was inspired of the campaign Black Life Matters they want to stop racism and bring equality between the races. orange is the new black focuses on the way black women are treated within the prison system and Kohan wanted to show that women especially back women can stand up for themselves with the help of others which is why the episode where they protest in the prison and create a big chaos  The “corruption” Brooks is referencing here is the death of Taystee’s best friend Poussey (Samira Wiley) – who importance is accidentally killed by a prison officer during a peaceful protest in season four – and the subsequent downplaying of it by the prison authorities. After this, Taystee goes from being sceptical of social justice to having an implicit understanding of its importance. In season five she embodies the role of an activist and campaigner, writing up a list of demands as the prisoners hold guards to ransom during a riot and speaking to the press, who have finally taken an interest in what’s happening at Litchfield thanks to celebrity prisoner Judy King being captured on camera. She has the strength to tell the press that Judy King will not be making a statement: “Judy King cannot speak for the inmates of this prison,” she says to an onslaught of paparazzi and news reporters. “Moments after our friend Poussey Washington was murdered by a guard, Judy King was packing her bags to go home on early release. Because she’s rich and white and powerful. Our fight is not with Judy King; our fight is with a system that don’t give a damn about poor people. And brown people. And poor, brown people."

Despite this, the show was criticised last season for its depiction of black characters whose storylines revolved around inmate-driven racial conflicts. Some went as far as to describe it as “trauma porn”: exploiting black struggles for white audiences.
This leads on to another issue of representation which which is the gender imbalance  within the show. There are about 3-4 male characters which are the prison officers, they have of course focused on women and have so many women characters due to the fact that is about women in prison. However, people could take that in the wrong way considering women always have something to say if a tv show or a movie is men focused therefore it makes it unfair and not equal. I think in this situation the purpose of the tv show is to portray the way women are being treated in a prison and the horrible things male prison officers do to them and get away from it. However, this represents prison officers in a bad light which creates a panic that all prison officers rape women prisoners and innocent people can suffer from abuse and being mistreated because of their profession. However, the show does outline serious issues that occur in prisons that should not be ignored and i believe these are the true intentions of what this is trying to represent.

c) Relevant legal/ ethical issues

Orange Is The New Black have not gone through any real life legal battles.
There are some ethical issues in the content of the tv show such as drug use, mature content, rape, substance use etc. For example, there are a lot of scenes where characters such as Nicky and Tiffany. They are both heroin addicts and due to the huge propaganda going on in the prison they can easily smug drugs in there and get high. this is an ethical issue die to so many teenagers watching it meaning that they could potentially be influenced on trying it which can lead to addiction and even death. OITNB is shown on Netflix and Netflix is very popular for all ages especially 12-30 years old and that age group is the most vulnerable and prone to try things they see other people do.

In the show there is also a lot of scenes where mature content between the females in the prison. This can become an ethical issue as in the UK the age rating for the show is 15+ meaning that it is bellow the legal age of being able to have intimate interactions with anyone, this can cause young teenagers to try and do things that are illegal by seeing the women in prison getting pleasure out of it, for an example when Piper and Alex had sex in the bathroom. The age rating is 15+ however anyone can access it meaning that even younger audience can watch it. People who are religious can be offended by it due to the fact that the majority of sex scenes are between the same sex and also that some religion do not tolerate sex before marriage.
There are also a lot of violent scenes in the show that are either between the inmates or the guards punishing the inmates in horrible ways. This can have an impact on victims of violence or ex-offenders who have experienced it, it can bring back the emotions. The more worrying side of exposing people to a violent content is that a lot of people are influenced to be violent by watching violent content, especially in this series violence is either not punished at all or punished very bad, this can have an impact on young people watching the show and seeing no consequences to the ones fighting can influence them to fight to increase the crime rates in the country as well as public's safety will decrease. for an example in the last season, all of the inmates began a riot and they ended up taking a gun and shooting one of the police officers. People may see this is having a gun makes you very powerful and that everyone will do what you want them to if you have a gun and this is wrong.

d)Role of relevant regulatory bodies

The BBFC is a trusted guide to media content. Working as an independent, The BBFC, is a non-governmental organization, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works (such as television programmes, trailers, adverts, public Information/campaigning films, menus, bonus content etc.) released on physical media within the United Kingdom. It has a statutory requirement to classify all video works released on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray and to a lesser extent, some video games under the Video Recordings Act 1984.
Orange is the new black has been classified for 15 years old and above. BBFC has rated OISTB 15 + years old due to the fact that there is not any discriminatory or racist language in particular, the fact that in orange is the new black there is a lot of drug taking portrayed but it has not been endorsed and shown in a way to encourage people to do it as it shows the inmates either suffering from bad side effects or being seriously punished for it. OITNB does have a lot of violent scenes however they do not dwell on the bleeding and pain or specific moves that can be copied to hurt somebody else. The guidelines also allow strong language however very strong language may be permitted and in the show, there is a presence of a lot of swear words however they provide justification for it. Orange is the New Black also portrays nudity and sex scenes which is also allowed by the guidelines for 15+ years old.
